Thailand beyond the islands everyone knows: where to go for a quieter kind of luxury
Where to stay in Khao Lak, why Thailand is steering visitors to quieter places, and how the new direct Heathrow flight to Phuket makes the trip simpler.
Anna Roffey · 7 November 2026
Thailand's tourist board has just told the UK travel trade that it wants fewer people crowded into the famous places. That is good news if you would rather have a quiet beach and a proper spa.
I have been reading the detail so you do not have to.
What 'Value Over Volume' means in plain terms
At WTM London this week, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) launched its 2027 strategy, called 'Value Over Volume'. The targets are at least 5% growth in tourism revenue and a 60:40 split of visitors between major and lesser-known destinations.
The theme is 'Healing is the New Luxury'. TAT's Deputy Governor for Marketing Communications, Parichat Boonclai, described a shift from value for money to 'value through meaning'.
For you, that means more attention and investment going into places that have been overlooked. Through its Link Plus initiative, TAT is promoting three in particular:
- Takua Pa, in Phang-nga
- Nakhon Si Thammarat
- Mekong River experiences in Ubon Ratchathani
TAT aims to lift international arrivals to these areas by 10%. These are the kinds of places where I find the better experiences tend to be, before everyone else catches on.
Getting there: the direct option this winter
Virgin Atlantic began flying Heathrow to Phuket on 18 October 2026. It is the only direct route from Heathrow to the island, three times a week.
- Outbound: Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays (flight VS214). It leaves Heathrow at 15:45 and lands in Phuket at 09:55 the next morning.
- Return: Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays (flight VS215). It leaves Phuket at 11:45 and reaches Heathrow at 19:25 the same day.
- Flight time: roughly 12 hours outbound and nearer 13 to 14 hours on the return.
- Season: currently scheduled until late March 2027.
Times are scheduled and can change, so we confirm them at booking.
It is a seasonal service, so the days are fixed. If your dates do not fit, we can look at a one-stop option instead. Virgin's own information also lists Air France, KLM and Emirates as one-stop alternatives from London.
This is where the detail matters. Because you land in the morning, well before standard check-in, a hotel that lets you settle in straight away makes a big difference after an overnight flight. Virgin suggests searching for eight nights to get seven at the resort, and I would plan around that. I would also arrange the transfer in advance, so you are met rather than negotiating on arrival.
Khao Lak and Takua Pa: Phang-nga's quieter coast
Khao Lak sits in Takua Pa district, in Phang-nga province. It is a little over an hour by road from Phuket airport (around 83 km). It is much calmer than the busy beach towns on Phuket's west coast.
Virgin describes it as a place for peaceful resorts, slow mornings and barefoot luxury. I think that is fair.
Here is how I would choose, by type of traveller:
- Couples wanting a calm, grown-up stay: The Sarojin and the JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort & Spa. The JW Marriott describes a lagoon pool and a garden that feeds into its food and wellness programme.
- Those who want everything included and a well-known name: The Sands Khao Lak by Katathani. Virgin Atlantic Holidays has offered it all inclusive, in a Sands Double Room. I would book that room category as the sensible starting point. It has family and adults-only zones, so check which wing your room is in.
- A larger resort with some variety: Avani+ Khao Lak Resort. It is a larger beachfront resort with several restaurants, popular with families.
I have not stayed at all of these, so my advice is to let me compare the rooms and locations for your dates before you commit. The room category and position within the resort often matter more than the star rating.
Wellness is part of TAT's push here too. It highlights surf therapy at Memories Surf House in Khao Lak. If you are not a surfer, a slow beach week with good spa treatments is a perfectly good version of 'healing'.
Beyond the beach: Nakhon Si Thammarat and the Mekong
TAT is also pointing people towards Nakhon Si Thammarat and the Mekong River in Ubon Ratchathani. Both are firmly off the usual UK itinerary.
They suit curious travellers who like to see how a country actually lives. I would treat them as an addition to a beach stay, not a replacement. I am still gathering the detail on how best to reach and stay in each, so I would build those with you rather than guess.
If you want a city as well, TAT also highlights personalised biohacking and longevity programmes in Bangkok. That could suit couples who want a wellness theme running through the trip.
The approach I would suggest is one known resort for comfort and one quieter area for character, with the flights and transfers joined up so it feels easy.
Weather and timing: choose the coast for the season
Thailand has two coasts with different weather patterns, so the right coast depends on the month. It is worth checking, not assuming.
Here is a current example. The Thai Meteorological Department has warned of heavy to very heavy rain and flash flood risk in the south from 7 to 9 November 2026. It also expects waves of more than two metres in thundershowers in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf. Phuket also saw flooding in October.
That does not mean avoid Thailand. It means this is not the moment for a rushed, last-minute decision about which coast to pick.
My general advice is to look at the Andaman side (Phuket and Khao Lak) for winter. If you are travelling at school half-term, I would plan around mid-February and book early, as seats on a three-times-weekly flight are limited. I would not choose a coast without looking at your exact dates first.
My take
Thailand's new focus on slower, more meaningful travel suits the way many of my clients like to holiday. A direct flight, a quiet stretch of coast and one well-chosen hotel can be better than a long list of places.
The best-known resort is not always the best choice. Sometimes spending a little more on the right room, or on a smoother transfer, changes the whole trip. Knowing when is the job.
Fancy Thailand without the crowds this winter or next?
Send me your dates, departure airport and budget and I will start looking.
