Marrakech Uncovered: Your Complete Guide to a Sunshine and Luxury Escape

Just under four hours from London Gatwick, Marrakech feels like another world. Rose-coloured walls glow at sunset, the call to prayer drifts over the rooftops, and the scent of orange blossom and spice follows you through the lanes.

It is one of the easiest exotic escapes you can take from the UK. There is no long-haul flight, no jet lag and, in summer, no time difference at all. Yet it offers a depth of culture, colour and hospitality that stays with you long after you land home.

Morocco is somewhere I know personally: I spent six months living there, travelling between Casablanca, Marrakesh, Agadir, Fez and Rabat.

In this guide I share what I tell my own clients before they travel: where to stay, when to go, what to expect and the practical details that make the difference between a good trip and a wonderful one.

Where to Stay: Medina Buzz or Palmeraie Calm?

Choosing the right area is the single biggest decision you will make for a Marrakech holiday. Get it right and the city becomes a joy; get it wrong and you may feel you never switch off.

For a sunshine and luxury escape, especially in summer, I often recommend the Palmeraie. This historic palm grove on the edge of the city gives you room to breathe, a proper pool and quiet nights, with the souks still only a short drive away.

Palais El Miria

Palais El Miria is a boutique, palace-style guesthouse set in the Palmeraie, with only around 10 rooms, so it feels intimate rather than busy. Guests enjoy an outdoor pool, a spa offering massages and body treatments, a poolside bar, a rooftop terrace and a restaurant serving Moroccan cuisine.

It sits roughly a 15-minute drive from Jemaa el-Fnaa and the Majorelle Garden, and a complimentary area shuttle is offered, so you can enjoy the energy of the city by day and return to calm in the evening. Guests regularly describe it as an oasis of peace after a busy day in the Medina.

When to Go, and What a Summer Visit Is Really Like

Marrakech is a year-round destination, but each season has its own character.

A July escape is all about embracing the rhythm of the heat, just as the locals do. My advice:

• Sightsee early. Visit gardens, palaces and souks in the morning, before midday.
• Rest in the afternoon. This is the time for the pool, a long lunch in the shade or a hammam.
• Come alive in the evening. Head out again as the heat eases, when Jemaa el-Fnaa is at its most magical.
• Hydrate constantly. Carry bottled water and wear a hat and high-factor sun cream.

This is exactly why a hotel with a beautiful pool and a spa, away from the busiest streets, is such a good choice for a summer visit.

Essential Travel Considerations for UK Visitors

A little preparation goes a long way in Morocco. These are the points I run through with every client.

Passports and entry

• British citizens can visit Morocco for tourism for up to 90 days without a visa.
• Your passport must be valid for at least three months after the date you arrive.
• Check that your passport is not damaged. The Moroccan authorities have refused entry to some travellers with damaged passports.
• Make sure your passport is stamped on arrival, as some travellers without an entry stamp have had difficulty leaving.

Entry rules can change, so always check the latest FCDO travel advice before you go.

Money matters

• The Moroccan dirham is a closed currency, so you cannot usually buy it in the UK. Exchange money or use a cash machine on arrival.
• Keep some cash for the souks, taxis and tips, as smaller traders rarely take cards.
• Haggling is expected in the souks. Smile, take your time and only agree a price you are happy with.
• Tipping is customary for good service in restaurants, for guides and for porters.

Culture and etiquette

• Dress modestly in the city. Covering shoulders and knees is respectful in the Medina and at religious sites. Swimwear is perfectly fine at your hotel pool.
• Ask before taking photographs of people, and expect that some performers in the square will ask for a small payment.
• Mosques are generally closed to non-Muslims, though the Koutoubia Mosque is beautiful to admire from the outside.
• Politely decline unofficial guides. A firm but friendly “no, thank you” works well. A pre-arranged guide makes the Medina far easier to enjoy.

Health and safety

• Drink bottled water and take care with salads and ice at street stalls.
• The summer sun is strong, so pace yourself and stay in the shade at midday.
• Always take out comprehensive travel insurance from the moment you book.
• Agree taxi fares before setting off, or let me pre-arrange your transfers so there is nothing to negotiate.

Getting there and around

• Direct British Airways flights from London Gatwick take under four hours.
• In summer, Morocco and the UK are usually on the same time, so there is no jet lag.
• Marrakech Menara Airport is roughly half an hour’s drive from the Palmeraie, depending on traffic.

Unmissable Marrakech Experiences

Seven nights gives you the perfect balance: time to explore, and time to do absolutely nothing by the pool.

• Jemaa el-Fnaa at dusk. The great square transforms at sunset into a theatre of food stalls, musicians and storytellers. Watch it from a rooftop café with a mint tea.
• The souks. A maze of lanes selling lanterns, leather, rugs, ceramics and spices. Go in the morning when it is cooler and calmer.
• Majorelle Garden and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum. Cobalt-blue walls, cactus gardens and fashion history. Book timed tickets in advance, as queues can be long.
• Bahia Palace and Ben Youssef Madrasa. Breathtaking examples of Moroccan tilework, carved cedar and painted ceilings.
• A traditional hammam. A steam, scrub and massage ritual that leaves you feeling brand new. Your hotel spa is the most relaxing way to try it.
• A cookery class. Learn to make tagine and Moroccan salads, then enjoy the feast you have created.
• The Atlas Mountains. A day trip to the Ourika Valley or Imlil offers cooler air, Berber villages and dramatic scenery.
• A desert dinner in Agafay. Less than an hour from the city, this rocky desert offers camel rides and candlelit dinners under the stars.
