An evening in Portofino (example post)

Portofino rewards the slow evening. The day trippers leave on the last ferry, the painted houses turn amber, and the whole harbour settles into that unhurried quiet that makes the Italian Riviera feel like a different country from the one you flew into.

If you are staying overnight, the choice comes down to two hotels. The Splendido sits above the bay, with the terrace views and the service history you would expect, and the rooms in the main house are worth the premium over the garden wing. The Eighteen Fifty-Four is smaller and more contemporary, a short walk from the harbour, and the better choice if you value space over grandeur.

Either way, book a table at Da I Frati for the evening of your arrival, not the second night. The first evening is the one that feels like a holiday; after that, you have already started planning the return.
